Absence is the latest installment in the horror movie disguised as a home made documentary subgenre, a trend that came to prominence with The Blair Witch Project and reached its pinnacle of popularity with Paranormal Activity. But all I could think of while watching this trailer was: aren’t we tired of this format yet?

The handheld camera effect is now a standard ploy for creating “scary” situations on the cheap. You don’t have to spend a lot on making an effective horror scene if you can just show a quick flash of a monster and then pull away and spend the rest of the scene with the camera rocking up and down as the character runs away and the audience becomes sea sick.
